Very rare small octagonal mirror called witch with five dominant lozenges, the two lozenges in the lower part are underlined by scrolls and encircled by a multitude of small lozenges forming cabochons, in the upper part rests two ovoid vases with feet flanked by scrolls in recall of the base. The tops of the vases take the form of baskets filled with flowers and fruit.
At the top, on either side, there are two circular lozenges beautifully encircled by a scalloped frieze alternating with a myriad of small cabochon lozenges, feathers or foliage and flower buds.
In the centre, the main tablet is sumptuously highlighted in an entourage of foliage, bunches of flowers and luxuriant vines, from which two quivers are suspended, one decorated with an arrow and the other with a thunderbolt. This central tablet is surmounted by two other quivers topped by two symbolic birds that seem to be courting or snogging each other, while in the middle of them a flourishing tree shoot rises up delivering another symbolic message.
At the bottom centre a bird in flight occupies the space, it appears to be a Phoenix.
* Certainly a small mirror celebrating the union of marriage *
The object is not in excellent condition but it is nevertheless singular, rare, very beautiful and of great interest. You will notice the pitting, oxidation and missing spots on the mirror; please also note the missing wood veneer at the marker.
