Luca Madrassi, Italian, trained in sculpture in Rome then in Paris with Pierre-Jules Cavelier before joining the studio of Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse. He then became the avowed practitioner of Gustave Doré between 1876 and 1880. From 1879, Madrassi, through his allegorical subjects and his talent for composition, acquired notoriety at the Salon des Artistes Francais where he obtained honorable mentions on several occasions. In 1896 he became a member of the National Society of Fine Arts and acquired French nationality.
