Antoine-François Prevost (known as Abbé Prévost or sometimes Prévost d'Exil) was a historian, writer and churchman from the first half of the 18th century. After a novitiate with the Jesuits, he joined the army. He then pronounces his vows. After the publication of a first work stamped with a letter of cachet, he fled to London, where he learned English and the history of England. Then he travels to Holland where he publishes. He finally returned to France where he ended his life with the Benedictines. The title Manon Lescaut was considered scandalous, seized and sentenced to be burned.
