"Primavera Large Cracked Cat In Art Deco Ceramic Circa 1930"
Very nice posture for this large and rare cat made by Sainte Radegonde for the famous "Primavera" art workshop of the Printemps stores. With a remarkable manufacturing quality with its thick shard, this cat is coated with a very beautiful cracked matte white enamel. We can read pages 170 & 171 in the book "Les crackles Art Déco" published by Penthesilia that this quality of manufacture and this enamelling were developed by René Buthaud. "René Buthaud, during his management of the pottery between 1923 and 1926, left his personal mark on the manufacture, by ensuring on the one hand the improvement of the quality of the shards with thicker walls, producing heavy statuettes and robust, giving off an impression of excellent craftsmanship; in addition, his personal research on cracking led him to develop for the production of Primavera, a specific crackle with a lumpy surface, loaded with blackish sandy particles, which simulates the look of stone." Height 33 cm: base 20 x 17 cm. Signed "Primavera France" and "STR" for Sainte Radegonde in ink and model number 12793 which allows the model to be dated around 1924 (see footnote number 28 page 170 of the same book).
