"Martinus Antonius Kuytenbrouwer : "the Rest Of The Piqueux""
MARTINUS (Martinus Antonius Kuytenbrouwer dit) (1821-1897) : "Rest during the hunt", oil on panel (two assembled plates) 34.5 X 27 cm, mounted in a recent green and gold frame, slightly rubbed 44 X 37cm. Signed Martinus and dated 1879. Born in Amersfoort in the Netherlands, he made a reputation in Paris where he ended his days as a hunting painter and engraver, to the point of becoming court painter to Napoleon III, leaving works in the lineage of the Barbizon School as here where a hunter in livery, probably a piqueux if we judge by his whip, takes a few moments of rest sitting with his dog at the foot of a tree, while a another arrives on horseback for the hunt.
