an oil on canvas dating from the 2nd half of the 18th century inspired by the very fashionable turkeries at the time.
this painting is reminiscent of Molière's plays between the imaginary patient and the bourgeois gentleman. the theme is rare and amusing:
the sultan, superbly dressed and wearing a large feathered turban, is lying on a large bed under a canopy with lambrequins.
two servants are near him, handing him a plate and some linens while hiding the patient's anatomy, while two other servants are busy in the background with an enormous enema.
the details of the decoration are superb:
an incense burner, a parquet floor, woodwork, curtains, probably a kind of commode in the foreground on the left. the set is in very good condition with a varnish having whitened in places. the gilded wooden frame is more recent but of a sobriety highlighting the painting.
the canvas rests on a beautiful frame with keys.
a very beautiful composition with a rare and entertaining subject nicely painted.
dimensions:
36 cm wide by 45 cm high and 48 cm wide by 57 cm high with the frame.
