Tony DE BERGE ( Tony François de Berge ), 1820 / 1893 ( French ).
Marine painter, lithographer and engraver.
He received his artistic training at the Ecole Royale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was a student of Léon Cogniet. It is with this master that he develops his love of marine subjects. In the class of Nicolas Gosse, he practices genre painting and historical painting.
He exhibited for the first time at the Salon in 1847 and again in 1861. His travels in the south of France, Spain and Portugal allowed him to report many scenes of Mediterranean and Manchurian ports and strikes. His touch, precise and meticulous in works of youth, widens and frees up over the years. He became increasingly interested in the effects of light, and while he continued to faithfully restore the rigging of the ships he painted, his treatment of sailors, marine waters and strikes was flexible and rapid.
