Officer's saber of the National Guard or the National Volunteers, known as the climbing lion
France, circa 1790 - 1792
Steel, gilt brass, basane.
Length. T. : 88,5cm ; L. of blade : 73cm

 
Brass mounting. Cap in leonine skin and long tail in its gilding. Handle tied, covered with basane and filigree. Arc of jointing prolonging itself by a plate opened with two rings of reinforcement.
Between the secondary branches, lion climbing on a tree trunk. Between the arch and the lower secondary branch, a rooster on a grenade.
Blade à la Montmorency, blue on the third part, with a decoration on a gold background: Sun, stars, Arabesque, half-moon, bundle of arms and the motto Vaincre ou mourir; the second part is in its original bright polish.
Leather scabbard, with two brass fittings; cap with button; asymmetrical iron stinger.
