"Zamble Mask, Gouro, Ivory Coast"
Mask representing a face painted red. The nose is slender, the mouth is half-open and reveals pointed teeth. Each of the cheeks is marked by a small incised cross enhanced with blue pigment. The headdress descends on the sides of the forehead and is surmounted by two horns. A collar starting from the top of the head surrounds the face. It is streaked with lines and herringbone patterns that are colored blue, white and red.
The sculpture is fine and very balanced.
This type of mask was used during the Zamble dance.
