Large Shi-shi or koma-inu (lion dog) from Japan with a beautiful handwritten gold-colored dedication under the belly, the object in cast iron lacquered in bronze color. Scratches, small oxidations.
The sphere is removable from the set.
The Shisa, also known as 獅子 shi-shi "lion", originates from Okinawa. It is found near torii, Shinto shrines.
They were mostly in pairs. Its name translates to "Korean Visiting Dogs".
The large models were outside, the small ones in the sanctuaries. Designed to ward off evil spirits, the pairs of komainu are almost identical, but one has its mouth open, the other closed.
The female, with her mouth closed, retains good spirits.
The male, with an open mouth, scares away evil spirits.
The origin of Shi-shi is Chinese. Important: Its interesting particularity is the dedication under the belly.
