Joseph Pierre Hilarion Castanié is a talented painter from Aveyron. Coming from a large family of upholsterers and painter-gilders from Espalion, he is rather known for his portraits of which the Société des Lettres praises "the perfect resemblance, the finesse of the painting and the perfect harmony of chiaroscuro". He exhibited for the first time at the Salon in 1850 and subsequently became an official portrait painter in northern Aveyron. He is also known for religious paintings, rarer like a painting representing the Crucifixion in the Monastery (IM12040455) or a canvas representing the Virgin at Sébazac-Concourès (IM12001222).
The Musée des Arts Décoratifs Denys-Puech in Rodez has several portraits attributed to Joseph Castanié: a nun (INV 1953.32.1), a doctor (INV 2014.3.1), the portraits of Mrs. Hippolyte Lambel (INV 1975.1.1) and of his son Paul Lambel (1975.1.2), also the Piffarero (D 2014.2.7) which he executed during his stay in Rome and which is now part of the Fenaille museum collections.
The church of Saint Fleuret in Estaing (a delightful little Aveyron village in the Lot valley) has a portrait of Saint Fleuret made by the artist.
