"Marionette Mask – Malekula Island / Vanuatu Archipelago"
On the island of Malekula, the Big Nambas and Small Nambas regions were the last strongholds to preserve strong traditions linked to complex social universes and organizations. This very beautiful and rare puppet head from this remote region of the Pacific is formed from an over-modeling of vegetable paste, mixing wood, pig's teeth, pigments, cobwebs and vegetable fibres. The combination of all these elements makes it a typical object of great charm. Beautiful old polychromy.
