"Iatmul Statue - New Guinea / Melanesia"
Old ancestral cult statue presenting a man seated on a stool, his hands wisely resting on his knees. Beautiful and peaceful, the expression of the face, whose eyes are formed of two shells (cowries) gives this statue a very wise and contemplative look. The powerful nose sculpted in relief ends with characteristic dilated nostrils, it is pierced with a shell loop. At the neck, hangs a very beautiful and fine necklace in braided vegetable fibers finished with several elegant elements in shell. All these shell accessories and decorations give this object an important aesthetic appeal. A beautiful old polychromy as well as drawings run through the body of this statue.
