*EUGENE LELIEPVRE
cavalry painter
and painter of the Elegantes
Born in 1908, he experienced the exodus of the Great War and, as a child, witnessed the charge of the French Cavalry in the cobbled streets of Lille: it decided his vocation as a military historian.
Official Painter of the Army since 1951, Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1998, specialist in the uniforms of the Old Regime, this now centenarian continues to paint in his studio in Montrouge. Lover of all forms of beauty, the feminine side of his work occupied a large part of his production from 1940 to 1970. 150 portraits of these ideal lovers are presented in Naked Elegance, Eugène Leliepvre's Feminine Imagination.
An equestrian painter, Eugène Leliepvre is also renowned for his hunts and animal paintings. For 40 years, he was a contributor to the French Chasseur, and illustrated the Manufrance calendar for 23 years in a row.
Model maker and figurine maker, he also created numerous dioramas for the Musée de la Marine in Paris and made (with the help of his wife) more than 300 small mannequins in costumes and equipment from the past. The Canadian part of this collection earned him, in 2008, the highest distinction in North America: “The Star to distinguished service award of the Military Historians Company”.
From 1960 to 1990, Eugène Leliepvre produced all the boards of
documentation and prototypes of Historex molds - first plastic brand of miniatures in the round and spare parts whose quality of finish equaled that of lead miniatures.
With an astonishing diversity of talent, the motto of this discreet titan is:
“Doing the best without taking into account the time spent”.
At the time of the balance sheets and in our culture of zapping, there is something to charm!
