Artist: Enrico Baj 1924-2003 Title of work: Female officer with medals, original frame with buttons in the corners. some visible wear, extremely decorative and artist with a large international dimension. Anarchism is the best launching pad for creative implosion." Enrico Baj Enrico Baj, Italian painter and sculptor, was born in Milan on October 31, 1924. He died on June 16, 2003 at his home in Vergiate, near Varese. Very young, Enrico Baj marked his rejection of authority by making fun of fascist dignitaries, which earned him some trouble with the police. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brera from 1945 to 1948. Baj manifested very early a predilection for collage, modifying glued wallpaper and conventional canvases with a few brushstrokes, religious images or landscapes. He founded the Nuclear Art movement with Sergio Dangelo in 1951. In the mid-1950s, Baj painted heads of "Generals" which he makes fun of by sticking on pieces of fabric and forgotten or invented decorations. Admirer of Father Ubu and the works of Alfred Jarry, he produced his first "Mountains" in 1957, composed of jagged peaks and of skies made of c ollages then invested with small monsters directed by a general covered with medals, epaulettes and other artifices. Between 1959 and 1966, Enrico Baj approaches the surrealists. In 1972 he produced "The Funeral of the Anarchist Pinelli", which expresses his horror of all forms of oppression. In the last years of his life, the artist painted a series of canvases in protest against the election of Silvio Berlusconi. Enrico Baj uses the technique of collage by employing various, rich and anachronistic materials and by playing on images that are sometimes naive, sometimes caricatural. His paintings are intended to be satirical and seek to mock the petty-bourgeois or military world.
