Born in 1717, this carpenter, passed Master in 1744, devoted himself to the manufacture of wooden seats. Established rue de Cléry, he died before 1782. This craftsman provided very graceful works (according to the Count of Salverte in his Dictionary of Cabinetmakers of the 18th century) He is represented in the State collections, in particular by 2 dissimilar armchairs, finely treated one and the other, decorated with flowers and scrolls. Seats by this Master Cabinetmaker are part of the Royal Furniture of Sweden at the Stockholm Palace. First established rue de Cléry, then rue Feydau, Claude Louis Burgat is best known for his production of Louis XV chairs but, practically, all his production is of high quality. They are always wide armchairs with a flat back, often with a frame. The sculpture (flowers and Rococo motifs) is scarce but deep and incisive, as are the moldings which show powerful and supple lines. Elegant ribs sometimes respond to each other in curves and counter-curves, punctuating the contours of the waistband and backrest. Additional refinement: the feet of certain models end in a volute facing inwards, a sign of high quality. The sculpture, at Burgat, underlines and accompanies the powerful and flexible lines of its frames.
