Object description :

"Fabre 1823 : "portrait Of A Man""
Fabre 1823 : "Portrait of a man", oil on canvas 65 X 54 cm mounted by two gilt cleats in a slightly earlier Empire frame 80 X 66 cm. Mounted by tension bands on a new frame, (the old one being completely worm-eaten). Dated and signed (I think) T or F Fabre Pxt (for pinxit) lower right. Even if the temptation to attribute it to the famous François-Xavier Fabre (1766-1837) of Montpellier is great, especially since it is the only one that would correspond in time in the Bénézit, I cannot certify it and sell it therefore as namesake. In any case, the attractive face, which is reminiscent of that of Champollion, of this handsome man with sideburns and curly hair, wearing a white waistcoat and black Brummel tie under a midnight blue coat, makes it an endearing and very decorative.
