"Black Pencil Drawing By Jean Cocteau"
Jean COCTEAU (1889-1963) French poet, painter, draftsman, playwright and filmmaker. Jean Cocteau is a flamboyant jack-of-all-trades artist who marked the 20th century with his genius. He is also the author of many drawings and these are now presented all over the world. Cocteau develops a great sensitivity and an obsession for certain poetic and mythological themes which are for him means of introspection such as the mirror, Oedipus, Orpheus, Antigone… The Testament of Orpheus or do not ask me why is a French film directed by Jean Cocteau in 1959 and released in 1960. The film narrates the death and resurrection of the poet. Hit by a bullet, Jean Cocteau bounces back into another time. Life and death, present and future, mythological and imaginary creatures, anxieties and fantasies mingle in no chronological order to compose the testament of the poet-filmmaker. The testament of Orpheus also gave rise to drawings. Drawing in black pencil on paper representing two faces in left profile with a lyre. Drawing alone: 20 cm x 25 cm
