"The Martyrdom Of Saint Bartholomew, Italian School Of The XVII Eme Century"
Very beautiful oil on canvas, Italian school of the XVII th century, representing the martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew.
the painting rests on its original canvas and represents Bartholomew tied to a tree while his executioner is busy skinning him alive.
the saint has his gaze directed towards a ray of light piercing the dark and tormented sky.
this famous ray illuminating with force the scene of martyrdom in order to show the presence of God accompanying the saint in his ordeal.
all around the landscape, the sky and the other characters are outside this luminous halo and remain in semi-darkness.
in the background we see the carriage drawn by horses as well as the three characters who condemned Barthélémy to undergo his torture.
very beautiful colored composition with a very nice work on the light.
a scene of martyrdom quite rare to encounter. modern frame in silver wood and black netting.
