Object description :

"Bolster "
Charming harness in the Napoleon III style, topped with a blackened wooden top, worked in the shape of a scallop shell, and provided with a round base, also in blackened wood, decorated with moldings and resting on galette feet. This harness is remarkable for its unusual sculpted shaft, representing the long tail of a dolphin whose head is straddled by a cherub. This tail resembles a winding branch decorated with acanthus leaves. Naked Eros, seated on his dolphin seems joyful, holding his curly hair with his left hand, the other resting on his thigh. Its legs have aquatic attributes reminiscent of the symbiosis that unites the cherub to its companion. We imagine them scouring the seas and sharing many adventures. This theme of the god of love riding a dolphin, a mythological animal, was recurrent in ancient art. It is here reinterpreted by the artist who creates a unique and poetic ornamental harness. ******** Period: 2nd half of the 19th century Excellent condition. Restored in our workshop.
