Such series of portraits of Roman emperors was commissioned from Titian by the Duke of Mantone Fédarico Gonzago. Originally, Titian had painted the portraits of the Eleven Caesars on canvas for the Ducal Palace of Mantua where they were enshrined in molded stucco frames called the "Cabinet of the Caesars" by the architect and painter Julio Romano. Made at the end of the 1530s, this cycle was sold to King Charles I of England in 1627 before going to the gallery of the Palasi de l'Alcarzar in Seville and disappearing in a fire on Christmas night 1734. Today we know these portraits from the engravings of Aegeidas Saedeler and from copies made by many artists, including the most famous late Bernardino Campi (1522-1591) at the Capodimonte Museum in Naples, which testify to the success of this set. 96 (H) cm x 85 (W) cm including frames. Restorations
A very rare series.
