Frrench-Fleimish School, XVII. The Massacre by the Triumvirate. Follower of Antoine Caron. The painting refers to the massacres in Rome in 43 BC.by Marc Antonius, Octavius and Lepidus. The triumsvirs had decided to massacre or exile about 300 opponents. In the right of the painting we see the three triumvirs seated on their thrones. The painting refers to the massacres of Protestants in France during the Massacre of Vassy (1562) under the Duc de Guise who had made an alliance with Constable de Montmorency and Jacques d'Albon de Saint-Andre, also known as the Triumvirate. We know about 20 versions of this composition exists, all anonymous. Antoine Caron's painting, from which this painting is inspired, is the only one signed and dated by the painter and is on display at the Louvre Museum. 100cm x 139.5cm
