45,5 X 55,5 cm (frame)

New oak frame.

Original canvas.
Small patch on one edge of the painting
Some wear on the ends (under the frame)
The painting is unrestored and offered in it’s genuine condition

Nice frame with keys
Old label incomplete on the back.

The painting does come from the Van Zuylen collection.
Acquired in his time in the painter's studio, which explains why it is not signed. It has remained for years in the hands of a collector from whom I myself bought it.
This painting has never been presented in auction sales nor in galleries.

The 14th of July (French National Day) has inspired many painters who have often highlighted the profusion of French flags that appear on this occasion
From Claude Monet to Fernand Léger, to name but a few...
Paerels, who painted a lot in Collioure, gave his version of the 14th of July seen from the port.

Biography:
Willem Adriaan Paerels (Delft, 1878 - Braine-l'Alleud, 1962)

Trained at the Technical College in Delft.
Moved to Brussels in 1898 where he worked as a decorator and began to paint as a self-taught artist.
During a stay in Paris, he discovered impressionism.
In 1904, co-founder of the "Le Labeur" group with Auguste Oleffe, Louis Thévenet and Fernand Schirren.
Later also member of the Cercle "L'Effort".
Then evolved towards more pronounced contrasts and a simplified style, which classifies him among the Brabant fauvists
(Rik Wouters, Marcel Jefferys, Fernand Schirren), supported at the time by the Galerie Giroux.
In the 1920s, his palette became darker and the anecdotal was banished from his compositions.
In his drawings, as well as in his painted portraits and landscapes, he achieves a form of youthful classicism through a wide range of graphic and pictorial means.
From 1910 to 1937 he regularly participated in the exhibitions of the "Kunst van Heden" in Antwerp.
He travelled a lot and settled in Braine-l'Alleud in 1939. From 1930 to 1955, he taught drawing at the Academy of Leuven.

Works in the museums of Antwerp, Brussels, Ixelles, Liège, Mons.
