"Biscuit “sappho à La Colonne”, After J. Pradier – 1920"
Biscuit entitled "Sappho to the column", after Jean-Jacques (aka James) Pradier, famous French sculptor, winner of numerous prizes, academician and knight of the Legion of Honor, and known for his neoclassical work. In this work, Sappho, lyric poetess of ancient Greece, is represented in a standing position, leaning on an Ionic column. She holds in one hand a barbiton with turtle shell, a musical instrument that accompanied her during her poetic songs. She is adorned with jewels and wears a beautiful antique tunic. The signature "J.Pradier 1848" is engraved on the column. Praise to femininity, "Sappho to the column" is also an ode to poetry.
