Georges Van der Straeten, (1856 – 1941) –
Belgian sculptor Student of Jef Lambeaux, he worked in Paris from 1883 and specialized in the friendly representation of Parisian women, completely in the spirit of the Belle Époque then in vogue in the capital city.
Georges Van der Straeten demonstrates great technical mastery in his creations and a high quality finish. He produced many portraits, graceful and enticing fantasy figures of young Parisian women where, according to Pierre Kjellberg, one "finds the amiable style of the sculptors of the 18th century"
This artist is representative of the Belle Epoque, the period when the Art Nouveau, international artistic movement that breaks with academic production. In this sense, it constitutes a new way of expressing oneself perfectly in phase with this period of political, social, technological and intellectual innovation.
He was awarded a silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1900. There are two works by this artist in the famous Van Herck collection acquired by the King Baudouin Foundation in 1997.
