In 1915, he was appointed inspector of decorative arts and architecture in artistic education. In parallel to this official function, he also carried out a certain number of official or private orders. He interprets feminine and childish forms with a sensitive and nuanced art. Her dominant qualities are grace and wit. After the First World War, he was also responsible for drawing up the plans for various commemorative monuments, among others in Halle, Vielsalm and Ostend. His best-known masterpiece is perhaps the fifteen-metre-high sculpture of King Albert I on the Albert Canal, which he executed on the occasion of the “Exposition de l’Eau” in Liège in 1939. He also produced funerary monuments. Although Rau studied architecture and was brought up in this environment - his father, Jules Rau, was a renowned architect and Victor Horta was his godfather - he did not however have the ambition to pursue a career in this field. direction.
