"Adolphe Faugeron : "saint-pierre d'Albigny" 1916"
Adolphe Faugeron (1866-1944) "Saint-Pierre d'Albigny", oil on paintable cardboard 17.5 X 26.5 cm, annotated and dated 1916 on the back, mounted in a pretty old gilt frame 22 X 31 cm. I first got to know this artist by buying a small painting representing the sea in Guéthary in the Basque Country and since then I have acquired a lot! Although he is very well known for his "large machines", more or less allegorical large-format paintings at the Salon, we know less that he was a Master of landscape, a genre he practiced from nature during his resorts on small formats, often on cardboard or panel or for slightly larger formats, on canvas. Undisputed virtuoso in rendering the nuances of the sea or the skies, he gives us here a bird's eye view of this charming Savoyard village on the edge of the lake, the mountains in the background in a superb spring light.
