Born in Moscow in 1902, he arrived in Paris in 1920, after many adventures between Baku and Constantinople. He lived poorly, like many of his compatriots, and met Chaïm Soutine, Marc Chagall and Moïse Kisling in Montparnasse.
The dealer Charles-Auguste Girard organized his first solo exhibition in 1927. He designed the costumes for the Ballets Russes de Monte-Carlo in 1933.
He recognizes the influence of Cézanne and Pissaro in his training.
