Student of Adrien Dauzats then of Justin Ouvrié at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where Paul Chardin became friends with Rosa Bonheur. He exhibited at the Salon between 1855 and 1875 landscapes, portraits, urban views and genre paintings. Living in Ville-d'Avray, he became close to Camille Corot, whom he often accompanied to Brittany in the summer. His taste for travel took him throughout Europe and the Middle East, such as Egypt, where he stayed in 1863, illustrating with numerous drawings the book by Arthur Rhoné (1836-1910), Voyage en Egypte, published in 1864, in which Adrien Dauzats also participates. He also devotes numerous drawings to the works of Étienne Ludovic Le Grand, Baron de Vaux, with whom he notably traveled to Syria, Lebanon and Palestine in 1879. Recently, in 2008, an album of 57 drawings by the artist went on sale in Paris, some forty of whom had served as models for the illustrations of Baron de Vaux's book, La Palestine (sale 2008, March 27, Paris, Piasa, n° 55). In the same sale, one could see several caricatures on various subjects, from which our drawings come.
