"Case Idjo Mask / Nigeria - 20th Century"
The Ijo (also known as Ijaw or Idjo) are an ethnic group of approximately found in the Delta or River State regions of Nigeria. People of farmers and fishermen, they sculpted many masks to venerate their ancestors and a multitude of deities called water spirits. It can be noted that this mask has a rather unique aesthetic and illustrates the great mastery of the Ijo craftsmen. The basketry on the back of the mask amplifies the ornamental interest of this object. The upper part of the mask has a particular care in its manufacture.
