"Mahogany Library, Louis XVI Style - 2nd Half Nineteenth"
Louis XVI style mahogany bookcase, lined with brass and topped with Carrara marble. It opens on the front with two glazed doors with a solid mahogany frame, mitred in the corners. In the lower part, each door is darkened with a solid mahogany panel about a third of its size. The panels and the panes are underlined by brass strips forming moldings with ogee. Between the doors, we find a half-round brass joint cover. The closing of the two doors is done by a “top and bottom” lock on the right door, accompanied by a brass entrance with its key in working order. After opening, we discover the interior, composed of three oak shelves with mahogany edge and adjustable on racks. The sides of this bookcase have an attached half column having three stop flutes inlaid with brass. The set rests on four "spinning top" legs adorned with a brass collar and ending in a clog foot. The sides of this piece of furniture are made up of three identical panels surrounded by brass mouldings and separated by thin crosspieces. The back legs are also lined with brass fluting. The top of this bookcase is made of lightly veined white Carrara marble, surrounded by an openwork brass gallery with overflows. This Louis XVI bookcase is unique by the constitution of these sides having three panels separated by crosspieces. The quality of its wood and its workmanship make it a rare piece of furniture, which seduces with its elegance and clean lines. ******** Period: 2nd half of the 19th century.
