Object description :

"Adoration Of The Shepherds, Engraving, After Pp Rubens, Lucas Vorsterman I (1595-1675) Antwerp 1620"
A copperplate engraving depicting the adoration of the shepherds. The young Jesus in the arms of Saint Mary is admired by a group of 8 characters including shepherds. Animals are also visible at the edge of the representation: a donkey, a cow and a dog. Copperplate engraving of Lucas Vorsterman I, who collaborated with Peter Paul Rubens between 1619 and 1621, producing prints based on the master's works. Print made after the painting by Rubens "The arch of the shepherds" from 1616-1619 which is now in the Museum of Fine Arts in Marseille. Lucas Vorsterman I (1595-1675) - born in Zaltbommel, entered Rubens' studio very early, where he perfected his skills and executed engravings from his master's paintings between 1619 and 1621. Rubens became the godfather of his son Lucas Vorsterman II (1624-?), who also became an engraver. In 1624 Lucas Vorsterman traveled to England. In 1630, he returned to Antwerp where he produced, among other things, a series of "Iconography" prints based on the works of Anthony Van Dyck. Copper engraving, Antwerp (Antwerpen), 1620. Signed, among other things, "PP Rubens pinxit" and "Lucas Vorsterman Sculp. et excud. An. 1620" Frame: 58 x 42 cm, engraving: approx. 45 x 29.5 cm . Preserved condition as seen in the photos, relatively good, there are stains and discolorations.
