Important orthoceras fossil
Paleozoic Era -500/-250MA
Tazzarine deposit, Morocco
Dimensions : H. 157 ; D. 24 (cm.)
Orthoceras were cephalopods with a univalve shell, like their distant cousins the nautilus, but the shell of orthoceras was straight, hence their name. The size of the species varies from a few centimetres to eleven metres in length for the largest members of this family. Like all nautiloids (and unlike the ammonoids) the siphon that connects the shell chambers is in an axial position. Nautiloids are quite common with a wide geographical distribution1 and an extraordinary diversity in forms. Large orthoceras were the main predators of the Paleozoic geological era. The lifestyle of these animals remains partly unknown.
