MAJESTIC SCENIC PORTRAIT OF WILHELM VON HAMMERSTEIN, BORN 11.19.1683, D. 08.15.1730, FROM THE HOUSE OF THOSE OF HAMMERSTEIN, WHO WERE ORIGINALLY RESIDING IN THE BERGISCHES LAND LATER IN LOWER SAXONY, WILHELM VON HAMMERSTEIN WAS ACTIVE AT THE ELECTORAL COURT BRAUNSCHWEIG FIRST AS A KAMMERJUNKER, THEN AS A RITTMEISTER IN THE SERVICE OF THE ELECTOR OF BRUNSWICK-LÜNEBURG (SEE DOCUMENTS AND REGESTEN ON THE HISTORY OF THE BURGHERS AND BARONS OF HAMMERSTEIN, HANOVER 1891), UNTIL 1698 THIS WAS ERNST AUGUST VON BRAUNSCHWEIG-CALENBERG, FROM 1698 GEORG LUDWIG OF BRUNSWICK-LÜNEBURG, THE LATER KING GEORGE I OF GREAT BRITAIN, WHO ESTABLISHED THE HOUSE OF HANOVER AS A ROYAL HOUSE (ASCENDED TO THE THRONE 1714), WILHELM VON HAMMERSTEIN WAS ACTIVE AROUND 1700 AT THE COURT OF THE BUSHING YOUNG ELECTORATE, ONLY IN 1692 THE ELECTORATE WAS GIVEN, WILHELM VON HAMMERSTEIN IS STAGED IN THE MAJESTIC PORTRAIT OF A CONFIDENT YOUNG NOBLE, AS A FULL-LENGTH PORTRAIT SHOWS THE BARON IN CLASSIC CONTRAPOST IN FRONT OF A COLUMN DIVIDING THE BACKGROUND INTO TWO PARTS, ON THE LEFT SIDE IT IS IN FRONT OF A BACKGROUND COVERED WITH A DARK BROCADE FABRIC WITH A SMALL FLOWERING TREE IN AN EARTHENWARE POT (PROBABLY AS A SYMBOL OF THE FAMILY TREE), ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE COLUMN THE VIEW OPENS ONTO A MAJESTIC GARDEN WITH ARCHITECTURE AND WATER FEATURES, IN FRONT OF IT, TWO KNIGHTS TRAINING THEIR HORSES (AS AN ALUSION TO HIS ACTIVITY AS RIDING INSTRUCTOR), PERHAPS THE BAROQUE GARDEN OF HERRENHAUSEN IS MENTIONED HERE, IN CONNECTION WITH THE VERSAILLES MODEL, THE PORTRAIT IS PICTURED IN ANCIENT NOBLE ALMOST ROMAN CLOTHES WITH PTERYGES, SHERPES, PORTEPEE AND SWORDS, FRENCH WIG, IN THE THREE-QUARTERS PORTRAIT THE SPECTATOR LOOKS DIRECTLY, IN THE MANNER OF A PORTRAIT OF A SOVEREIGN, YOUNG NOBLE AGED ABOUT 14-16 AT COURT, IN 1729, SHORTLY BEFORE HIS DEATH IN 1730, WILHELM VON HAMMERSTEIN MARRIED MARIE VON OER, THE LANGELAGE HEIRE, OF THE NOBLE WESTPHALIAN FAMILY OF OER, RÜCKS.
