COOK'S TRAVELS . James Cook was a British explorer and cartographer born on November 7, 1728 (October 27, 1728 according to the Gregorian calendar) in Marton (Middlesbrough) and died on February 14, 1779 in Hawaii. Accessing the rank of captain in the Royal Navy, he made three trips in the Pacific Ocean during which he was the first European to land on the east coast of Australia in New Caledonia in the South Sandwich Islands and Hawaii. He was also the first navigator to circumnavigate Antarctica and map Newfoundland and New Zealand .
