Africa Beautiful Watercolor By Emile Appay 1876 - 1935 village scene in Africa Émile Appay (June 2, 1876 in Saint-Just-October 7, 1935 in Vaux-sur-Seine) is a French painter whose landscapes (oils and watercolors) are in the style of vedute Émile Charles Appay was born on June 2, 1876 in Saint-Just (Eure)1 but he spent his childhood in Paris in the 15th arrondissement. His father Charles Appay was a lithographer printer which explains his taste for art. He was a pupil of Henri Harpignies (1819-1916) and Paul Lecomte (1842-1920). He married in 1900 and had two children. He was friends with André Derain and they liked to ride bicycles together. He also liked to go fishing and he often painted waterways or fishing scenes with his friends. He was recalled at the age of 38 as a soldier in the First World War. He will make many drawings of the combat zones2. In particular in the Aisne where he was posted in 1916 in the region of Faucoucourt or Estrées (Battle of the Somme). His younger brother André, born in 1891, was killed in November 19143 at Bucy-le-Long (Aisne). He also traveled to Africa. Appay exhibited his paintings in various galleries in Paris: Georges Petit gallery, Pierre Le Chevallier gallery, Jules Gautier gallery, P. Hénaut gallery (Paris) (1928 - 1934). He also exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1910 to 1920. He died in Vaux-sur-Seine on October 7, 1935.
