The goddess hides her genitals with her left hand and her breasts with her right hand, hence her nickname Venus Pudica. The goddess is represented in her movement as if surprised when she comes out of the water (as the dolphin at her feet evokes). Long kept at the Villa Medici, very probably known by Botticelli who was inspired by it for The Birth of Venus.
