This large 17th century wooden sculpture of Saint John the Evangelist or Saint John of Calavaire is faithful to the most common representation given to him.
He is recognizable by his delicate appearance, fine face and most often beardless. Probably part of a group that was at the foot of the cross, he was in the company of Mary among others and his gaze, eyes raised, is in the direction of Christ on the Cross.
This sculpture is characterized by an immense expressiveness of the face and the hand on the heart.
Saint John the Evangelist wears pleated garments worked with strong movement. The long points of the shirt of the so-called "Walloon" type as well as the pronounced top of his hair allow him to be placed at the dawn of the 17th century.
In good condition with lacks (a hand among others, small accidents and bites).
Formerly polychromed with some remnants.
