Saint John the Evangelist
Medieval polychrome wooden sculpture
Franco Hispanic sculptor
End of the 13th century
Walnut wood carved and painted
Height 68 width. 20 prof.12.
Complete and without remakes.
Much of the surface has the original polychromy.

This extraordinary sculptural work, an important historical and artistic document, best represents the first signs of the rebirth of art after the long night of the darkest years of the Middle Ages.
We are towards the end of the 13th century and the first enlightened artists of the Romanesque era begin to give birth to artefacts which, despite the evident simplicity of construction, express incredible strength and highly refined stylistic purity.
The journey that will lead to the splendor of the Renaissance in the following centuries is about to begin, passing through the important and surprising lesson of Gothic art.
This is certainly a museum-level sculpture that satisfies the most demanding collector, in search of strong sensations, in search of the rarest and most exciting piece.
Exceptional is the presence of almost all of the original polychromy which allows a complete reading of the work, and to fully grasp its artistic and spiritual message.
This important testimony of medieval art, with its rarity and historical value, gives us the emotion of being able to admire the innovative and inspired work of an artist who lived almost a thousand years before our time. His hands have shaped a perfect and exclusively sacral cult image, far removed from the religious representations of the centuries to come which, by overriding the devotional purpose, get lost in the celebration of individual artistic abilities.
The wooden essence of the sculpture is absolutely intact, with a still solid and compact consistency.
