Djajims were made in most Iranian tribes. But we find the majority of djajims among the shahsavans. The weaving technique is different from that of the kilim. The warp is visible and defines the colors of the bands, unlike kilims where the design is defined by the weft. The djajim is made from long strips, 20 to 30 cm wide, cut and sewn together.
The territory of the shahsavans lies south and west of the Caspian Sea, in Iranian Azerbaijan. Made up of Kurdish, Persian, Turkish, Tajik and Caucasian ethnicities, the Shahsavan confederation was formed during the reign of Safavid ruler Shah Abbas (reigned 1587-1629).
