Also known as “The Meissonier of landscape”, Louis Gautier was a landscape painter who was borned in Aix-en-Provence in 1855. Except for a temporary stay in Paris to study painting with Alexandre Cabanel, he had spent almost the whole life in his home country. In the south of France, Gautier executed many landscape paintings capturing the view from Luberon to Nice. Apart from landscapes, he has also painted some interior decorations and Still Life.
The windmill of Silver Fountain, which cannot be found today, can also be seen in another artist’s work. In this piece, we can see all the iconic elements of Gautier’s specialties: soft colors and meticulous drawing.
