Under a vast sky swept by clouds, the painter knew how to render the movement of the skaters captured in full action. The sun enhances the effects of reflections on the frozen river.
A pupil of Schelfhout, NJ Roosenboom worked in The Hague.
Attached to the Dutch romantic school, he participated in the revival of Dutch painting.
He specialized and gained a reputation for his winter landscapes and scenes of skaters.
