"Vuvi Mask / Gabon"
Gabon is known for its production of white colored masks, a color that comes from Kaolin, a whitish clay densely composed of aluminium. Several styles of mask are distinguished by their aesthetics, including Punu and Vuvi. In the case of the latter, the faces carved in wood always have their eyes closed. These masks, carved in light wood, have finely sculpted lines, the density of which is increased by the addition of colored or dark pigments, thickening the expression lines of the mask. This very interesting set of contrasts that can be seen on the object is made possible thanks to the many natural pigments of the region. This type of mask, long worn during funeral ceremonies, has seen its use expand and become a mark of honor.
