"Lunar Mask - Baoulé / Ivory Coast"
Among African productions, Baoulé artefacts are particularly accessible to Western tastes due to the aesthetic standards of the Baoulé but also the finesse of execution of their masks and statues. Representing the Moon, a subject rarely addressed by Baoulé productions, this type of mask symbolizing meteorological or natural phenomena generally appears at the opening of the Gbagba. The serrated border, pierced with holes running around the contours of this mask, testifies to the great assurance of the craftsman's hand. The very fine and circular mouth as well as the eyebrow arches meeting to form the nose are characteristic of the Baoulé aesthetic.
