The Shahsavan represent an important tribe of nomads of Turkish origin in northwestern Iran.
We meet the Shahsavan of Moghan, Mianeh, and Hashtrud who produce the mafrash without flap and the Shahsavan of Bidjar and Khamseh with flap. Initially, these nomads came from Anatolia and settled in northwestern Persia at the end of the 16th century after asking permission from the Safavid king Shah Abbas to settle in his territory.
The nomads' request to Shah Abbas coincided with his search for protection of the kingdom's northern borders.
The name of the nomads "Shahsavan", literally translated, means "friends of the king (shah) or "those who love the king (shah).
Today hardly a few Shahsavan are still nomads.
Most live a semi-nomadic life or have settled in the south, mainly between Tabriz and Tehran, as well as around the town of Veramin.
Others also live in the northern part of the country bordering Azerbaijan.
Characteristics of Shahsavan carpets: The typical Shahsavan shades are often deep indigo blue and red, the Moghan use more earth and ocher colors associated with indigot blue.
These carpets are finely woven with very complex geometric patterns specific to each region and group ethnic.
Compared to other Iranian nomadic tribes, the Shahsavan hardly produce knotted pile carpets anymore.
The weft is in pure wool of good quality, the warp thread is either in wool or in cotton.
It is interesting to know that Shahsavan tents named "Alachiq" differ greatly from other tents used in Iran.
They strongly resemble Turkmen yurts.
