Hendrik Frans Schaefels, also known as Rik Schaefels, born in 1827 in Antwerp and died in 1904 in the same city, is a romantic Belgian painter, draftsman and engraver known for his seascapes, his history paintings. He is highly regarded in Europe for his depictions of historic naval battles.
Hendrik Frans Schaefels made numerous drawings which served as studies for his paintings. He spends much of his time outdoors drawing the boats and activities in the port of Antwerp and the houses and people in the streets of Antwerp. His drawings are careful and picturesque. His designs include the study of all types of ships, cutters, cherry choc, clubs, people on docks, quayside, shipyards and early steamships such as the 'British Queen' and the 'Baron Osy' . The drawings and notes that Schaefels adds to his drawings provide historical information about sea and river transport of the time.
A selection of his drawings is part of the collection of the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp.
