"Von Carolsfeld (attributed To) : "jacob's Struggle With The Angel""
Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld (1794–1874) (attributed to) : “Jacob's Struggle with the Angel”, oil on canvas 22 X 26 cm, mounted in a rocaille style frame 38 X 43 cm. When I bought this dirty painting on a market in the early morning, with an accident in the center which has since been magnificently restored without parts by the Atelier Lafouresse, mounted in a simple papier-mâché frame, I was of course thinking of romanticism and of course obviously to its most illustrious representative: Delacroix. A cleaning later, I had to realize that it was not him, but the accuracy of the movements, the quality of the composition, very removed without repeats, attested that it was the work of a Master. This was the subject, taken from Genesis, treated many times from Rembrandt to Chagall by the artists who, during a search by image, made me come across the corresponding engraving taken from an illustrated bible of 1860. From there to think that it was the painting provided to the engraver as a model, there was only one step that I took cheerfully without however being able to certify it. This eminent representative of the Nazarenes in his great compositions, has a more finished, polished profession, but it is plausible and logical that the first studies are more removed. With a little imagination (or, for that matter, the eyes of faith), one can make out what could be a trace of a signature on the right of Jacob's foot. As I absolutely wanted Jacob's foot and the Angel's hand to be visible, I mounted it in a frame that was a little too large in width, allowing one day to be seen, a defect that will be easily corrected by adding two chopsticks on the sides.
