"Engraving Hendrick Goltzius Robertus Baudous Ryckius Salamacis Hermaphrodite"
Engraving signed lower center: HG for Hendrick Goltzius. ( 1574-1659) and bottom right G Ryckius. Hendrik Goltzius Hendrik Goltz, whose name – as often in the Renaissance – was Latinized to Goltzius, was a Dutch engraver and painter from a family of artists. A precocious talent, despite an infirmity which paralyzed his right hand, he excelled in copying the masters he admired (Dürer and Raphaël in particular) and shared his activity between engraving and painting (a late vocation), working both on themes religious than mythological subjects (Goltzius moreover made a trip to Rome in the years 1590/1591, from which he returned with a sketchbook now kept in the Teylers Museum in Haarlem). Salmacis and Hermaphroditus, the nymph Salmacis embraces Hermaphroditus in a pond. In water, they merge into an androgynous creature.
