MANTES, Between 1700 and 1707.

Early period measurement in perfect condition and perfectly hallmarked. Let us recall in passing that these pitchers were the wine measures of the Ancien Régime. The capacity of those used in inns, drinking establishments, etc., had to be checked periodically by the royal or ecclesiastical power to ensure "good measure" for the consumer, but in fact, this regulation was little applied and the pitchers which bearing gauging hallmarks are very rare. The Metric system appeared at the very beginning of the 19th century and took several decades to establish itself due to the resistance to change shown by users, but little by little these uniform cylindrical measures eventually replaced the pitchers which presented, it is true, a variety of interesting shapes characteristic of their place of manufacture, but also an infinity of different gauges from one city to another and often even from one village to another, however close they may be. This significantly complicated the exchanges
