Monumental painting "Assumption of Mary with the apostles around the empty tomb".
Antwerp school. Mid 17th century.
Large format painting, an altarpiece of a private church originally.
Recently an almost identical painting of the Sint-Amanduskerk church in the town of Aspelare (40 km from Ghent and Brussels) has been attributed to the Antwerp painter Cornelis I Schut (1597-1655, Antwerp).
See the painting in the Belgian church on the Flemish paintings archive website.
The difference between the two paintings, most likely executed from the same cartoon, lies in the size and less character on the left. It is therefore a painting probably executed with the help of the workshop from the same preparatory cartoon.
Baroque painter Cornelis I Schut was influenced by Rubens and Pietro da Cortona, he was also a cartoonist for the Italian tapestries of the Medici Arazzerie. He was present in Italy in the years 1618-28.
The Madonna is represented seated on the clouds as on a throne, surrounded by the crown of rays of light and by the chubby angels in dizzying glimpses. In the lower part we see the empty tomb of Mary and the apostles surprised by this miraculous vision.
The last restoration of the painting was done about 40-50 years ago.
There are pictorial retouches from the old restorations. There are lifting of the canvas due to the old re-lining.
Period frame, in ebonized wood.
